Missing in Action is a novel based on extraordinary true events, set on the Eastern Front during the Second World War. It follows the exploits of its main character, Valia, a young, ordinary Soviet soldier. At the outbreak of Operation Barbarossa, he is sent, along with his anti-aircraft battalion, to protect the vital railway crossing over the Dnieper River in the Ukrainian city of Kremenchug. Valia joins in the heroic defence of the city, and despite their very limited resources, the defenders manage to prevent the Nazi forces crossing the river for a whole month. Despite their fierce resistance, Valia’s battalion is eventually destroyed and with no ammunition or weapons left, he is forced to surrender. During his captivity, Valia suffers appallingly and gets to witness many truly horrifying scenes. When disease becomes rife amongst the prisoners, he inevitably contracts typhoid. Here, he gets a tempting offer that may just save his life. Valia eventually manages to escape, and does what he can to survive behind enemy lines, and over several months, walks all the way to Belarus. On his journey, Valia has several close encounters with the Nazis as he attempts to join the partisans. Can he stay that one step ahead of death?
